XY Data Values Section
Applicability: Cranium, Synapse (core versions 0317+)

The XY Data Values section contains one large field that manages data entries. Each entry consists of an x value, a y value, a label, and segments.

1
X Value: the value to be displayed on the graph's x axis.
2
Y Value: the value to be displayed on the graph's y axis.
3
Label: a text value used to document the enter data value. Labels are often automatically generated by Cranium and Synapse when transferring physical property values to a graph.
4
Segments: one or more short text values used for specifying curves and regions.
Editing Data Values

Clicking the left mouse button on the field's large table control activates the Edit XY Data Dialog.

1
Data Display Table Control: the dialog's main table control displays the values, labels, and segments that make up xy data.
2
Edit Button: selecting a row and pressing the Edit button activates the Edit XY Datum dialog enabling you to specify or change a data entry's values and attributes. See below for documentation.
3
Commands Button: displays the commands menu enabling you copy, paste, clear, insert and delete rows of the data sets table. See the documentation for Common Menu Commands for details.
4
Set Source Button: the dialog's Set Source button will be enabled if one or more rows are selected. Pressing the Set Source button will activate the Assign Reference and Comments dialog. This dialog enables you to assign a reference and comments to all selected data values.
5
Sort Button: selecting two or more rows and pressing the Sort button activates the Sort Attribute dialog . The dialog will sort the selected rows according to the selected data attribute.
6
Set Segs Button: activates the Edit Data Segments dialog which enables you to assign segments to the selected data values. See below for documentation.
7
Add Seg Button: activates the Edit Data Segments dialog which enables you to add a segment to the selected data values. See below for documentation.
8
Regress Button: selecting two or more data rows and pressing the Regress button activates the Regress Values Dialog. The dialog enables you to regress x and y values into a variety of equations.
9
Add Rows Button: adds rows to the end of the data table control.
Editing a Datum Value

Pressing the XY Data Edit dialog's Edit button or double-clicking the left mouse button on a row in the dialog's table control activates the XY Datum Edit dialog. This dialog enables you to enter coordinate values, a text label, and segments as well as supporting information.

1
Coordinates Controls: enter the x, and y values for the corresponding component compositions.
2
Accuracies Controls: optionally, enter the accuracies of the x and y values. An accuracy must be a number greater than 0.
3
Text Label Control: enter the text label to be associated with this datum. The label can be any text value although it is typically kept to a short phrase.
4
Previous Button: pressing the dialog's Previous button (located in the Text Label control group) copies the text label from the previous datum and enters that value into the dialog's text label control.
5
Segments Controls: displays three segments to which the current datum can belong. All data associated with a specific segment are used to graph a curve or fill a region.
6
Previous Button: pressing the dialog's Previous button (located in the Segments control group) copies the segments from the previous datum and enters those values into the dialog's segments controls.
7
Reference Control: the Reference control enables you to enter the identifier of the reference from which you obtained the datum's' value. You can type in a value or use the dropdown list to select a recently entered value. Entering a reference is optional but highly recommended.
8
List Button: pressing the List button displays the Reference Selection dialog. This dialog enables you to select the identifier of any reference in the current document. (See the All Entities dialog documentation for more details on selecting references.)
9
Comments Edit Control: displays and enables editing of the comments associated with this datum.
10
Date, Phrase, and Set Buttons: the Date button inserts the current date and time into the Comments Control. The Phrase button inserts the current user's 'Personal Phrase' into the Comments Control. The Set Button activates the Set Phrase Dialog which enables you to change your personal phrase.
Assigning Segments

Selecting one or more data rows and pressing the XY Data Edit Dialog's Set Segs button activates the Edit Data Segments dialog. Data in the same segment will all be drawn on the same curve or region.

A data segment can be any valid text value. However, most segments are short words.

Assigning Segments

Selecting one or more data rows and pressing the XY Data Edit Dialog's Add Seg button activates the Edit Data Segments dialog. Data on the same segment will all be drawn on the same curve or region.

When activated using the Add Seg button, the dialog has only one segment edit control enabled. The segment you enter into this control will be added to all selected data values.

A data segment can be any valid text value. However, most segments are short words.

Example: Enter an xy graph value datum
  1. Open the MKS Graph Examples document. (Open a "working" document or create a copy of a document (see here) if you are just experimenting with this functionality.)
  2. Change to the XY Graphs Chapter and press the Add toolbar button (the large plus sign). Alternatively you can choose the Add Page command from the Edit menu or use the crtl-a keyboard accelerator. The application will add a new, blank page to the XY Graphs chapter.
  3. Click the left mouse button in the identifier pane's edit control and enter a name into the activated dialog.
  4. Scroll to the XY Data Values Section and click the left mouse button on the section's large table control. The application activates the XY Data Edit dialog.
  5. Select an empty row and press the Edit button. The XY Datum dialog is activated.
  6. Enter a value of 20 for the x coordinate and 50 for the y coordinate. Enter 'label' into the text label control and 'seg1' into the first Segments control and 'seg2' into the second Segments control. Optionally, enter values for the reference and comments.
  7. Press the dialog's OK button to store the entered datum into the Data Edit Dialog.
  8. Finally press the data dialog's Save button to store the new Data into the current graph document.
