All Entities Dialog
Applicability: Cranium, Synapse (core versions 0315+)

The All Entities Dialog is used throughout Cranium and Synapse for the navigation and the selection of entities. For almost all entity types, the dialog has the same format. (A different dialog is used for navigating and selecting groups. See documentation for the All Groups Dialog for details.)

1
Attribute Control: the attribute to display for each entity. The options for control vary depending upon the entity type. An entity's identifier will always be one attribute option. Other attribute options include synonyms, chemical formula, authors and titles.
2
Entities List Control: the list of attributes associated with each entity. Note that an entity may be listed more than once. For example, if you are listing all chemicals and selected the synonyms attribute, then the Entities list may contain several entries for the same entity - one entry for each synonym.
3
Match Substring 1: the dialog will display only those entities whose selected attribute contains both matching substrings.
4
Match Substring 2: the dialog will display only those entities whose selected attribute contains both matching substrings.
5
Detail Button: pressing the Detail button will display additional information about the selected entity. The type of information displayed is dependent upon the type of entity selected.
6
Notes Button: pressing the Notes button will display any notes entered in the entity's General Notes Section.
7
Recommend Button: Cranium and Synapse will often recommend certain entities depending up the current selection context. Some recommendations are simply the entity you previously selected. Others will depend upon how frequently one entity is associated with another entity.
Selecting References

The Entities Dialog is commonly used for selecting references for entered datum values. Most data entry dialogs that have a Reference edit control also have a List button. Pressing the List button activates the Entities dialog which will list alll of references in the current document.

1
You can associate a reference with most datum values in Cranium and Synapse. Pressing the List button, found in most dialogs, will activate the Entities dialog enabling you to select the identifier of any reference present in the current document.
Example: Displaying chemical details

Many entity types provide additional details to facilitate selection. Selecting an entity and then pressing the dialog's Detail button will display this additional detail.

  1. Open a knowledge base document using either Cranium or Synapse.
  2. Using the tabs at the top of the document, change to the Chemicals Chapter by clicking the left mouse button on Chemicals tab.
  3. Select the Go To command from the Navigation menu or press the ctrl-g keyboard shortcut. The application will display the Go To Chemical dialog.
  4. Select hexadecamethylheptasiloxane or any other convenient chemical. Use the Match Substrings controls to help find the named chemical.
  5. Once you click on hexadecamethylheptasiloxane, the Detail button will become enabled. Press the Detail button. The application will display the Chemical Details dialog.

See the Chemical Details Dialog documentation for details on using the dialog.

Example: Displaying technique notes

Every entity has a General Notes Section. This section is typically near the bottom of the entity's page. Selecting an entity and then pressing the All Entities Dialog's Notes button will display these general notes.

  1. Open a knowledge base document using either Cranium or Synapse.
  2. Using the tabs at the top of the document, change to the Techniques Chapter by clicking the left mouse button on Techniques tab.
