Symbol Dialog
Applicability: Cranium, Synapse (core versions 0315+)

The Symbol Dialog is available from most edit control menus if the value being edited is a text value. Identifiers, references, comments, notes and synonyms are common values into which special symbols may need to be inserted.

Special symbols may be needed throughout Cranium and Synapse. Chemical names and synonyms often use special symbols.

The Symbol dialog is activated by selected the Insert Symbol command found on many edit menus. (A control's edit menu is activated by clicking the right mouse button within the control.)

Clicking the right mouse button in a text control and selecting the Insert Symbol command will activate the Symbol dialog.

The Symbol dialog contains a large window displaying symbols that can be inserted. A second window lists the symbols that have been recently used.

Example: Enter the identifier for a new reference
  1. Open an MKS Knowledge Base document. (You may wish to use a working knowledge base for this exercise.)
  2. Change to the References chapter.
  3. Add a new reference by pressing the '+' button in the toolbar. The application adds a new, blank page to the References chapter.
  4. Click the left mouse button in the identifier field. The application activates the Identifier edit dialog.
  5. Enter the following identifier: 'Růžička + Domalski (1993)'. To enter the special characters click the right mouse button in the edit control.

    Click the right mouse button within the Identifier edit control to activate the command menu.
  6. The application activates the Symbol dialog.

    Select the desired symbol and then press the Insert button.
  7. Locate the ů, ž and č characters. Click on the character and press the Insert button. The special character is inserted into the edit control.
  8. Continue entering the Reference's identifier using the keyboard and the Symbol dialog.
  9. Finally press the Save button to store the identifier into the current document.
