Changing Case
Applicability: Cranium, Synapse (core versions 0315+)

When copying and pasting text values, e.g., the title of a reference, you may often need to change the case of the entered text. For example, the title of a reference might be "THE SYNTHESIS AND PURIFICATION OF ETHERS". For consistency, you might wish to enter the title into Cranium or Synapse as "The Synthesis and Purification of Ethers". The Change Case menu command can perform this change.

Three types of case changing can be done:

  • UPPER CASE: all selected text will be converted to upper case characters.
  • lower case: all selected text will be converted to lower case characters.
  • Title Case: the first letter of the selected text and the first letter of each major word will be converted to an upper case character. All other characters in the selected text will be converted to lower case.
Example: Changing a title to Title Case
  1. Open the MKS Sample KB document and change to the References Chapter. We will be canceling all changes made during this example so there is no need to make a working copy of the document.
  2. Within the Reference Information Section click on the Title Field's text edit control. The application will activate the Text Edit dialog.
  3. Click the right mouse button on the dialog's edit control and select the 'Select All' command from the commands menu.
  4. Click the right mouse button on the dialog's edit control and select the 'Clear Text' command.
  5. Copy the following text: SATURATED LIQUID DENSITIES OF HCFC 123 AND HFC 134A.
  6. Click the right mouse button on the dialog's edit control and select the 'Paste Text' command. The copied title will be pasted into the text control.
  7. Again, click the right mouse button on the dialog's edit control and select the 'Select All' command from the commands menu.
  8. Click the right mouse button on the dialog's edit control, move the mouse over the 'Change Case' command, and select 'Title Case' from the activated submenu. The application will convert the characters in the edit control.
  9. IMPORTANT: Press the dialog's Cancel button so that all of the changes we made during this example will be discarded.

Note that the conversion is not perfect. The terms 'HCFC' and 'HFC' were changed into 'Hcfc' and 'Hfc'. Most likely you would want to change these terms to upper case characters, which you can do by again using the Change Case command.
